Inappropriate and dysfunctional behavior includes: failing to provide appropriate limits (leading in an overly accommodating ways), chronically speaking to others with disrespectful tones (either unwittingly or purposefully), displaying anger inappropriately, verbally bullying others, and even physically attacking others. Of course, the cost to the organization can be enormous. In addition to dramatically reducing productivity, dysfunction can create costly litigation and penalties, injury and even death.
Dysfunction is the result of many factors. One problem that often occurs is that the identified employee lacks interpersonal skills. However, it is important to understand that with almost all dysfunctional behavior, the culture of the organization is supporting - or even promoting - the dysfunction.
Our approach in dealing with dysfunction varies, depending upon the situation. We may interview the supervisor of the identified employee. We may interview other individuals who work closely with an identified employee. We might meet only with the identified employee to discuss the behavior and to develop a program for skill building and change. Programs may also involve working with top management to strengthen and build the culture of the organization in order to minimize the possibility of problem behavior occurring.
